Meet Phil Whelan – Managing Director of New Red Planet
A personal approach to payroll, people and partnership
My name is Phil Whelan, and I am proud to be the Managing Director of New Red Planet.
Behind every payroll is a person relying on us to get it right and a business trusting us to support its workforce. That responsibility shapes how I lead NRP, how we work with our partners and the service we deliver.
We support recruitment businesses, employers and contractors across education, health and social care, construction, rail, highways and civil engineering. Each sector has its own pressures, but the foundations of a strong partnership remain the same: trust, clear communication and dependable support.
From professional football to business leadership
My professional career began in football whilst studying for a degree in Accountancy at the University of East Anglia.
After completing my BSc (Hons) in Accountancy and spending over a decade in professional football with clubs including Ipswich Town, Middlesbrough, Oxford United and Southend United, I returned to education and completed my PGCE.
Teaching quickly became more than just a profession. Over the following 15 years I worked with pupils, parents, governors and education professionals from a wide range of backgrounds, eventually progressing into senior leadership and Headteacher roles.

My starting point is always to listen. I want to understand how your business operates, where the pressures sit and what you need from us.
