Message from the MD, Phil Whelan

Welcome to New Red Planet, and the wonderful world of payroll and finance.

It seems like only yesterday that I started New Red Planet but it’s amazing to think that it’s now been 6 years! We’ve been on an incredible journey in that time, and now have a fantastic team ready to support our current and future clients with all of their payroll and finance needs.

On a personal note, it’s been an interesting journey that’s taken me to the point of payroll and accountancy:

At the age of 18, I commenced my accountancy degree at UEA while playing football for Ipswich Town. During my final year at university, I combined my studies with 35 Premier League games, a League and FA Cup quarter Final and 3 caps playing for England U-21s.

Amazing to think that I finished that year with a degree in accountancy and a trip to Buffalo to take part in the 1993 World Student Games.

After a career that took me to Middlesbrough and Southend, via Oxford and Rotherham, I came to the end of my footballing days with many ideas about my next venture.

While finance and accountancy remained a passion I decided that, with a growing family and longing to stay involved in sport to some point, teaching was to be the next step on my career ladder.

Education & Teaching Roles

For 15 years, I enjoyed being a classroom teacher, including as headteacher for the last 5 years, and coaching the South Cheshire U-11 District Team.

During my time as a headteacher, I learned more about supply teachers and the recruitment supply chain, and my interest in the world of finance was reawakened. You can see more about my fantastic, rewarding experience as a headteacher on the PL Primary Stars website.

Fast forward to 2019 and New Red Planet was born.

New Dawn. New Red Planet.

During my time as MD of New Red Planet, the umbrella and recruitment sectors have seen many changes, some of which we will see and hear more about in the coming months: IR35; COVID restrictions; Employment Rights Bill; Umbrella Legislation.

As such, it is a role that is never boring and there’s always something new to learn and discover more about.

The team of payroll and accounting specialists at NRP work with a range of companies, both in the recruitment sector and beyond. We provide expert service and advice and are always keen to hear from new or prospective clients.
