My name is Phil Whelan and am proud to be able to call myself Managing Director of New Red Planet.
My working life has been varied up to the point of entering the financial sector and I am excited to be working with a fantastic team to ensure New Red Planet becomes a leading player in the Umbrella market.
My first career, as a professional footballer, coincided with studying for a degree in accountancy at the University of East Anglia. Interestingly, UEA is in Norwich and my first club as a professional was Ipswich Town, who football fans will know is Norwich City’s big East Anglian rivals.
After completing my degree and earning a BSc (Hons) in Accountancy, I continued my career in football for a further 10 years, playing on for Ipswich and then moving to Middlesbrough, Oxford United and finally Southend United.
Time passes and age creeps up on us all and so it was on to pastures (and career) new. I returned to University to study for a PGCE and embraced the opportunity to enter the classroom and share my love of learning with pupils from a wide range of backgrounds. I really enjoyed working as a teacher for 15 years, the last 5 of which was as a headteacher. Despite the view that teachers often complain about the difficulties faced in the job, I loved every minute working as a teacher, with and alongside some fantastic and inspirational people: teachers, pupils, parents and governors. It is because of this love for education that I continue in my role as a governor at a local High School.
After managing school budgets and payroll for a number of years, working closely with the finance team in my school’s LA and meeting many people from the recruitment sector within education, my thoughts drifted back to my accountancy studies and what ‘Might have been!’.
As such, I now find myself as MD of a company providing payroll and accountancy services in a range of sectors. After previously working in 2 jobs where customer service and support of the end clients were key to the success of the business/school, I am very aware of the importance of creating the right working environment for internal staff, agencies and contractors. What I love most is working with people and I look forward to meeting many new and prospective clients/contractors over the coming months.
Take Care, Phil
